Salsa in the Dark Tonight

Free Dance Lessons for Everyone!!!!

    Starting in May, we will host Beginner Dance Lessons every Friday from 5pm-9pm.  The dance styles taught will be Break Dancing for those young at heart, Ballroom, Argentine Tango, Spanish Flamenco, Belly Dancing, Hip Hop and many more. 

   
Every week at 6:30pm, we will also teach Casino Rueda (Cuban Circle Dancing) for 1 hour, followed by some Social Dancing.  Everyone is welcome, especially those of you who say that you have two left feet.  So please mark your calenders, details are below.......

New Swing Sextet Has New Singer......

A new, suave voice in Orlando Ortiz (an ex Pittsuburgh Pirates baseball player from 1984 to 1986) was adopted by The New Swing Sextet (NSS) to hone his skills and to break comfortably into NSS's sweet sounds last night at TAJ Lounge, NYC. I told George Rodriguez: "This one's a keeper!" The guys of NSS seemed very pleased with him. Orlando's a 43 year old, born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. I asked him who his absolute favorite vocalist was and he immediately responded "Cheo Feliciano!" He continued to tell me that he remembers Cheo was the father of a childhood friend in Puerto Rico but at the time didn't know it. "I remember accidently breaking "una figurita" in my childhood friend's house and he (Cheo) was mad! To think, I didn't even know it was Cheo Feliciano at the time!", Orlando shared. "I have no formal training", Orlando continues, "but my mother is one of 14 sisters and in Puerto Rico, they all played guitar and sang. Singing is in me; in fact, I get anxious when I know I have to sing. I just love singing and exercising!", he shared, laughing. Orlando presently lives in Connecticut and is also the vocalist for Karibe Mambo, a band out of Connecticut (www.KaribeMambo.com) specializing in an Afro-Puerto Rican sound. "A la Cortijo?", I asked. "Yea! Bien Boricua" Orlando said.

Orlando sure did look (and sound!) comfortable and seemed to be having a ball singing for NSS last night. This vocalist was discovered by Angel (conga player and co-leader of NSS) at The Fonda Boricua and he loved his style, excitingly informing the rest of the band about this singer. Look out for him, y'all!! This Wednesday, NSS should be well on their way to Turkey to make people swing out there! "The first thing I am going to find out is where the gym is", said Orlando.

"Drop in"  lessons  at the Flying Dog !

Don't forget the drop in lessons at the Flying Dog in Waterloo at 7:30 every Thursday night.   These lessons have proven to be very popular and students are learning lots of new elements every week.  Just a reminder that the cost has increased slightly due to new equipment purchases, but still a great BARGAIN at just $12 per class.   Remember, you can stay for the FREE club lesson immediately following these classes so it's two classes for the price of one !   If you have been wanting to learn salsa or perfect your moves, come on out to these smaller group classes and learn either beginner/basic,  advanced beginner or intermediate moves.  3 classes for you to choose from, depending on your level.    All classes taught by www.salsaontario.com  instructors.   Day/Place  :      Every Thursday at the Flying Dog Time :               7:30-8:30 pm (prior to the free club lesson) Cost :                $12.00 per person     Beginners taught by Jeffrey ,  Advanced Beginners taught by April and Intermediates taught by Looey and Pat.

Don't forget Latin night at the Flying Dog on Marsland Drive in Waterloo this and every Thursday night .  Come for the drop in lessons noted above and stay for the FREE club lesson , all taught by SalsaOntario instructors.    The Flying Dog is the BEST place to go on a Thursday night !   Great dancing all night long to the fantastic tunes played by our main man, DJ Kruz !   See you there !   It's a new month and you know what that means...............this Wednesday , May 6th is Latin Fiesta Night at the Ebar on Quebec Street in Guelph.   Don't miss out on the fun at Ebar as Latin Fiesta only comes around on the first Wednesday of the  month !   Looking forward to dancing the night away to the BEST of the BEST Latin music played by none other than DJ Gury Gury !  This Saturday,  May 9th , there is a new event taking place in Guelph - woohoo, another place to check out !!   Our friend DJ Gury Gury will be playing the tunes and he tells me that it will be taking place at the Guelph Guggenheim,  129-B Woolwich Street in Guelph.  It is a funky new place all the hipsters are visiting, so be there !   Salsa starts at 10:00 and the cover charge is $5.00.      The next Button Factory dance will take place on Saturday , May 16th  at 25 Regina Street South in Waterloo.  Tango , salsa and ballroom dancing all night long.  Tango class at 8:15 p.m. , dancing from 9-midnight. $15 for the whole evening, $10 for the dance only .  No partner required , no pre registration required.    Another event coming up in Guelph from our friends at Yoruba Productions on SUNDAY, May 17th ............. the band, CUBAN SON  will celebrate its 3rd anniversary at the FOX AND FIDDLE, 55 Wyndham St North, Downtown Mall Guelph starting at 9.00 PM.   Cover charge is $10.00, Dress Code in effect. 19+.   This event is also going to feature DJ Asere Q from Havana , Cuba.   Sounds like a great night out !  April, Looey and I have to say a big THANKS to all of you who came out and participated in our RUEDA BLAST workshop !!  We had about 30 people in the circle and it was truly a BLAST !  We really pushed everyone hard to learn a ton of moves, and I have to say that everyone rose to the challenge !  Unfortunately, the Victoria Park Pavillion is now under renovation so we are looking for a new venue for our next workshop .   We are hoping to do the next level in June but stay tuned for more information !!   June is not that far off  and there is a great family event coming up .   Our friend Isabel Cisterna from Neruda Productions has sent me information about Kites of Joy and Freedom Festival on June 14th from 12-7 at Victoria Park in Kitchener .  The event will feature live music ( featuring from Puerto Varas Chile,  "Zapatijazz"), storytelling, exotic foods, vendors, video booth (come and express what freedom means to you) and much more...   This is a great opportunity to bring the community together to celebrate this ancient art tradition.   Most importantly, do not forget to attend the Kite Workshop which is on June 6th  and 7th .
