There is a new Number 1 on the Viejoteca chart this month the new release from Gilberto Burgos y su Orchestra "Salsa Romantica Agresiva" makes it way to the top of the Viejoteca charts. The re release of Ray Barretto's the Message stays in the top 25 at number 14. Another important new release making its way to Number 6 on the Viejoteca list is the new CD from Envidia Pedro Brull y Jerry Medina's "Estacion Candela" . Sure to be a classic is the band of youngster from Puerto Rico Orquesta la Remembernezas make their debut in the top 10 at number 8. Making it's debut at number 5 is the digital only new release from Latin Soul Records Featuring great numbers from la Protesta, Jose Chepito Areas, Orquesta la Moderna amogest others. Lots of material from the Emuisca vaults again with a strong showing of Fania re releases. Perhaps THE most diverse band ever formed in Toronto, the 14 piece Salsa Africa orchestra is comprised of players and producers with roots in Madagascar, Peru, Kenya, Germany, Nigeria, Cuba, Ecuador, Jamaica, Italy and Venezuela. The five principles of Salsa Africa are singer/composer Yeti Ajasin aka Lady Son (Nigeria), guitarist/singer-songwriters Donné Roberts and Adam Solomon (Madagascar and Kenya), pianist/composer Roberto Linares Brown (Cuba) and percussionist and music director Luisito Orbegoso (Peru). Also included in the Salsa Africa Orchestra are such influential Toronto musicians as Richard Underhill, Daniel Stone, Alexis Baro and many many more.(Full list below) Salsa Africa was created by Lula Lounge co-owner Jose Ortega, who observed that although contemporary latin and African music share many roots, there is not a lot of overlap in Toronto between the players or audiences for these musical forms. "Lula hopes to encourage musicians to take advantage of the cultural and musical diversity that Toronto offers by bringing together players creating and performing in different genres." Under the direction of musical director Luisito Orbegoso, the principle members of Salsa Africa developed their repertoire through a collaborative effort with each member suggesting a few songs. Some tunes were chosen for their lyrical content exploring the debt of latin forms to African rhythms, musical structure and dance. Some African tunes were chosen because their latin flavour could be emphasized and celebrated through a different arrangement. Several of the Latin pieces were selected because their African roots are very close to the surface - just waiting to be revealed. Roberto Linares Brown Best known for his arranging credits with Cuban mega-stars Adalberto Alvarez and Mayito Rivera (Los Van Van), keyboardist/composer Roberto Linares Brown launches his first solo album at Lula Lounge  on February 25 Yeti Ajasin Born in Canada of Nigerian and Italian parentage, percussionist/vocalist/composer Yeti Ajesin leads one of Toronto's most popular salsa bands -  Lady Son y Articulo Veinte. Adam Solomon Leader of the local African group Tikisa, guitarist/vocalist composer Adam Solomon played with a variety of legendary  Kenyan artists before moving to Canada to perform with The AfroNubians and African Guitar Summit. Donné Roberts The son of Madagascar diplomats living in Russia, guitarist/composer/singer Donné Roberts organized African music cultural events there before moving to Canada to pursue a solo career and perform with The African Guitar Summit. January Top 25 2008

The compilation from emuisca of Hector Lavoe entitled “La Voz” has made it to Number 1 on the Viejoteca chart this month. The re release Crillo which had been Number 1 is now number 4. Another important new release making its way to Number 2 is the Latin Soul Records and DJ Duste comp entitled “Que Viva la Salsa Dura!!” Sure to be in the top of the year picks coming in January. Making it's debut at number 15 is the new release from Viejoteca favourite Luis Mangual. The title track is getting lots of request action on the Live 365 portion of Viejoteca. This is to be a classic release of 2008. Lots of material from the Emuisca vaults again with a strong showing of Fania re releases. Lots of new entries into the Top 25 this month including Johnny Ray's aka Zamot's new one, Pacho, Robert Incelli y one my fav's Orquesta Borinquen.
